Bookmarked 2024 Week 41

How has your week been? What have you been reading lately? I finished The Other Couple, Triona Walsh, which will be released at the end of the month. It was a quick read for me as it grabbed me from the beginning, and kept me guessing about what was happening right up until the end. Now, on to the 10+ things I bookmarked recently.

Novella library haul

one+ Han Kang has won the Nobel Prize in Literature. I’m sure I’m in the minority, but I did not enjoy Kang’s only book translated into English (so far), The Vegetarian.

two+ This week I posted 3 #WickedGoodReads That Will Make You Scared to Travel By Plane, Boat and Car and Kim shared 3 #WickedGoodReads that Blend Dark Fantasy & Horror. Some good books for you to check out!

three+ Do Vampires Ever Go Out of Style? Here are a few recommendations – not all are scary! From the list, I loved Bride, Ali Hazelwood and highly recommend.

four+ One of the features I look forward the most to is the monthly installment of Jo Walton’s Reading List (September 2024). In case you’re not familiar, Jo Walton is an author of 15 books (and counting)). Her reads are always so diverse and interesting.

five+ When is an interview too tough? CBS News grappling with question after Dokoupil interview with best-selling author Ta-Nehisi Coates about his new book, The Message. There’s a lot being said on both sides – have you seen the interview?

six+ I mentioned that I was in vacation in Tokyo last week. We focused heavily on the food culture and tried something different for almost every meal. My favorite thing was seeing how everything is done with artful presentation and I’m definitely taking that back with me to incorporate into my life.

seven+ And then we left this week ahead of hurricane Milton to wait it out in Georgia, and worked from my cousin’s house. I don’t talk much about work on here since this space isn’t related to my job which is in the food manufacturing industry, but, what has been a hot topic in the industry of late has been the Boars Head deli meat recall that has resulted in 10 deaths so far and multiple people hospitalized (Note this is not the company I work for). In any company that is a meat processor, there is a government inspector on site every single day! They walk around, inspect production and all areas of the factory, and write up the facility if they find anything. So in this case, there were signs. 2 years worth of notices from inspectors, but the plant was never closed. Super sad that this happened, and hopefully, it spurs some needed changes in the industry.

eight+ What’s a recent hack/tip that made something easier for you? For me, it was accidentally stumbling on the fact that selecting text you want to create a link for, then holding down “Ctrl+K” on the keyboard brings up the “link” box on WordPress. Let me tell you – this made writing these posts so much easier (when combined with enabling the “Top Toolbar” setting).

nine+ This was also like re-stocking week for a few things I was out of – these Ease Mood Magnesium and Ashwaganda supplements (helps me with sleeping and night sweats), a monthly subscription for Orgain Nutritional shakes for my parents (I have one for the Plant-Based Protein Shake). Also Victoria’s Secret is having a sale, and with my $30 off coupon, I got some pretties. I also had a $60 off coupon from REI, so I bought running socks. I’ve tested a bunch and these are my favorite but I do tend to get blisters on the side of my 2nd toe, so I also purchased these Inijiji toe socks to try out and this one to test when I start trail running in a few weeks.

ten+ What are you watching lately? Anything from Weird-Girl Films for Fall? Perhaps the latest American Horror Stories? There’s also some excellent suggestions on She Watches: October 2024. I’m looking forward to spending one day or evening this weekend just reading and watching tv. Will it happen? That I don’t know, but I’ll tell you next week.

—- Cheers to the weekend and week ahead!
