Bookmarked 2024 Week 31

How has your week been? What have you been reading? I’ve hit the point in the summer where I don’t feel like reading much, but I did manage to finish The salt Grows Heavy, Cassandra Khaw, a body horror novella. I enjoyed it immensely and it put me in the mood to try and get more reading time in my day. Now, on to the 10+ things I bookmarked recently.

one+ Over at reddit/books – my favorite discussion this week – What’s a book opinion you’re tired of hearing? I completely agree with the poster that said, “I’m tired of the subset of readers that act like it is a competition or they get gold stars. You read 100 books a year, do bingo card challenges, and read only award winning novels? Awesome. You have four kids, a stressful job, and do light, pulpy audiobooks that bring you joy? Equally awesome. Don’t look down on popular books. Don’t look down on audiobooks. All reading is valuable and rewarding. It is a personal choice.”

two+ Are you going on vacation during the summer? Consider reading one of these Destination Thriller – I enjoyed and recommend The Guest List, Lucy Foley. If you’re not a summer traveling kind of person (I’m not), then check out these 10 Best Fiction Books to Escape Reality for Adults. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Taylor Jenkins Reid was so good!

three+ A little humor from Mcsweeney’s Preorder Book Sales Are Key. “In fact, many of our best authors have seen the value not just of pre-publication sales but also of pre-conception sales. If you can squeeze just a few preorders out of your book before you even write it, that will help for so many reasons, not least of which because it could give you the actual idea for the book.”

four+ The most popular Book Club Book of this Summer seems to be The God of the Woods by Liz Moore. Have you read it, or are you planning on reading it? It looks like something I’d like so I plan on picking it up later this year.

five+ A look at How celebrity book clubs actually work says celebrities are reading the books they recommend, and try to do it organically. Do you believe this? Do you belong to one?

six+ For my fellow mood readers, here’s 84 New Mood-Based Reading Recommendations (Across Genres). I haven’t read most of these titles, but want to read quite a few.

seven+ I pledged that I’d be reading lots of horror books this summer, and I love this list from Books, Bones & Buffy Horror A-Z. Lots of good ideas for the A to Z Book Titles Reading Challenge that I’m doing.

eight+ Here are the TikTok Book Award Winners UK and Ireland 2024. “Jewell’s None of This Is True took book of the year (UK & Ireland), while Yarros’ Fourth Wing won international book of the year. Hibbert was named BookTok breakthrough author and creator of the year went to Maisie Matilda.” Also The Booker Prize 2024 Longlist has been announced.

nine+ Off the books – what have you been watching on the tele recently? I watched The Beekeeper (movie – Prime Video) – typical action movie and I liked it! Also finished watching Season 1 of Dead Boy Detectives. I thought it was different and I liked it more as the season progressed. Also, are you watching the Olympics? I love this time of year. Here are some Books to Read for the Summer Olympics. “These books featuring interesting stats and facts on the Olympics, as well as biographies of some of the athletes, past and present.”

ten+ Adaptations Shine in 2024 Emmy Nominations. Shōgun, based on the book by James Clavell, received 25 nominations, Netflix’s Ripley, a limited-series adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley starring Andrew Scott, has 13 nominations and Hulu’s Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, based on Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era, has 10 nominations.
