How has your week been? What have you been reading? I finished Nameless: Season 1, Dean Koontz, which is 6 short stories. They were simple and just what I needed to reset after a month of reading fantasy novels. Then I moved on to Tidal Creatures, Seanan McGuire which was released this week. I’m still in the middle of it, and while it started out slow for me, bogged down by way too many explanations, it’s gotten better. I love McGuire’s Wayward Children series. Now on to 10+ things I bookmarked this week.
one+ Hey June! June is Audiobook Appreciation Month. Here’s 10 Reasons to Read Audiobooks and for recommendations, Immerse yourself in these 20 full cast recording audiobooks. Plus these are Libro.fm’s Top 10 Bestselling Audiobooks of All Time to check out.
two+ As usual with the start of a new month, we get Best Books of June 2024, as chosen by the Amazon Editors. Almost every book on this list sounds salacious! I love it. And I can’t believe almost all the books on Amazon Editors’ personal favorites for summer reading are on my “to read” list. But to be fair – that list is huuuge!
three+ The Goodreads Editors’ Picks for June Reading is also out, along with Goodreads Readers’ Hit New Books of the Year (So Far). Are there any books from this list on your TBR? I have 2 or 3 on mine including James, Percival Everrett and Bride, Ali Hazelwood. Another “Best of” list that came out this week – Barnes & Noble Best Books of the Year (So Far).
four+ A new month also means you get a FREE choice from a select few books at Amazon First Reads if you’re a Prime subscriber. This month you get a bonus short read, Falling Down, Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. That’s quite the duo! They co-wrote The Strain, which I rather liked and on which the horror tv show, The Strain), is based.
five+ Love the tips in How to Design Your Summer Reading List: A Guest Post by Gretchen Rubin. I am choosing to read mostly books in the genre I wanted to read more of this year – horror – similar to Books, Bones & Buffy’s Summer of Horror.
six+ The National Book Foundation has a Summer Reading Program for Adults and the “adventures” look like they are going to be so much fun to complete. The Adventure is a celebration of the National Book Awards’ 75th anniversary, challenging readers to complete as many literary activities as they can over the summer, like swapping a book with a friend, reading outside, or making a pilgrimage to a literary site, and more. Also see How to Make Summer Reading Special as An Adult.
seven+ More summer reading – 20 new books hitting shelves this summer that NPR critics can’t wait to read, Book recommendations for every kind of summer person and Barnes & Noble Summer Reading 2024 Recommendations. Clearly, summer is being treated as prime reading time.
eight+ Off the books – Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums. No. 1 – The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hill. That album was fire! I’m slowly listening to every album on this list. I’m sure it’ll take me all year.
nine+ The 2023 Stoker Awards Winners were announced and The Reformatory, Tananarive Due won for Superior Achievement in a Novel. Well deserved – if you haven’t read that book yet, add it to your reading list stat (we recommended it as one of 6 Books by Black Authors for the 2024 PopSugar Reading Challenge).
ten+ The 2024 Thriller Awards were also announced. All the Sinners Bleed, S.A. Crosby won for Best Hardcover Novel. That’s another book I read earlier this year and loved.
In case you missed it, on the blog this week we posted My 2024 Reading Challenges plus June and Summer Reading Challenges and Awards. Cheers to the weekend and week ahead!
