Bookmarked 2024 Week 20

How has your week been? What have you been reading? I finsihed my first Brandon Sanderson novel, Tress of the Emerald Sea. I loved the whimsical fairytale style of the book. It was written so well. This was the first release from Sanderson’s 4 secret novels Kickstarter project – which was the biggest Kickstarter campaign in history, raising US $20.3M in just 3 days. Now, here’s your weekly dose of 10+ bookish links I came across recently.

one+ My reading theme in May is fantasy. What Kind of Magic User Would I Be? Well – I’d be a fire user for sure. It takes quite a bit of effort to get me going, but when I do, I burn HOT and for a long time, even if it’s just simmering out of sight.

two+ Let’s Start a Fight: Are Science Fiction and Fantasy the Same? My gut reaction is no – they’re not! But the article does make some really good points.

three+ Have you used Spotify for audiobooks yet? I don’t have a premium membership, so I haven’t but here are some thoughts from 6 Months of Spotify Audiobooks and Everything You Should Know About Spotify Audiobooks.

four+ I was trying to hold out talking about summer until June – but then this week, Goodreads’ annual guide to the best books to read this summer came out. Such a fun guide with Outta-This-World Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror Summer ReadsBook Recommendations for (Nearly) Every Kind of Summer Reader and more.

five+ If you’ve ever wanted to (or do) access advanced reader copies of books, check out The Different Ways to Access Books on NetGalley.

six+ The 6 title shortlist for the 2024 Women’s Prize for Fiction has been announced. The winner will be announced on June 13, 2024. And The National Book Foundation announced their National Book 5 Under 35 2024 Honorees. The 5 Under 35 honors five debut fiction writers whose work promises to leave a lasting impression on the literary landscape.

seven+ The 2024 Locus Awards Top Ten Finalists were announced this week and winners will be announced on June 22, 2024. There are 10 finalists in each category, and I’m particularly eyeing the Horror Novels as books to add to my reading list. I’ve already read 4/10 with my favorite being The Reformatory, Tananarive Due. Also, The Crime Writers’ Association announced the shortlists for the 2024 Dagger Awards. The winners will be announced at the annual Dagger Awards’ Dinner on 4th July.

eight+ Some tech – I’ve been thinking about getting an E-Ink Tablet after seeing some of my colleagues with the reMarkable 2, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Do you have one? I’m still on the fence even after reading What an E-Ink Tablet Is (and Isn’t) Useful For.

nine+ Off the Books – I also saw, “the can’t look away from, train wreck of a tv series, Baby Reindeer (Netflix).” Jeeehzus! “Dealing with a female stalker, a man is forced to face a dark, buried trauma.” I wasn’t going to watch it because the name of the series put me off – sounds stupid to me – but I saw a recommendation for it somewhere online, and once I started – Gawdddd! That dude goes through some SHIT!

ten+ In case you missed it, we posted the May 2024 Key Word Reading Challenge Check-In and Motif Reading Challenge Check-In plus 6 Recommendations for the What’s in a Name Challenge.

Cheers to the weekend and week ahead!
