How has your week been? What have you been reading? Last weekend I participated in Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon and finished off Red Queen, Victoria Aveyard and the remaining 3 novellas I hadn’t read that have been nominated for this year’s Nebula Awards. I most enjoyed The Crane Husband, Kelly Barnhill which was a weird ass book. It’s the retelling of the story of The Crane Wife and beautifully don as welle. one+ TIME magazine published its annual list of the 100 Most Influential People of 2024 and 2 authors made the list, Lauren Groff and James McBride. Have you read any books from these authors? I’ve read Fates & Furies by Groff and Deacon King Kong, McBride. Did you know that Lauren Groff has a bookstore in Gainesville GA?! And that Dua Lipa, who headlines the list of artists, has an online book club, Service95? LitHub notes that there are a few others who are “literary adjacent.”
two+ Money – or rather how much people make is still like a secret, so loved reading The Money Diaries: Real Writers, Budgets which is a collab between LitHub and Dirt.
three+ I’m currently reading only my 2nd “new” book – meaning it’s published this year – The Familiar, Leigh Bardugo. If you’re looking at new SFF, check out this list at Most Anticipate Books of 2024 – Second Quarter and New Dark and Twisty Novels from Horror to Thriller.
four+ If you’re a fan of The Shadow and Bone series by Bardugo, and watched the 2 seasons of Shadow & Bone on Netflix, you’re probably a little sad at the news that there will be no season 3.
five+ Via Reddit Books – What’s a book you loved, but don’t wish you could read again for the first time? and Books you wish you could read foe the first time again? There are a zillion comments on both threads. For me, all my 5 star reads – but singling out The Passage, Justin Cronin (SFF) and The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley Jackson.

seven+ Why Are We Still Debating If Audiobooks “Count” As Reading? “But why does it matter? We’re all reading for fun here. We’re not in school and we’re not in a competition. No one is testing our reading comprehension skills, and there are no prizes for reading the hardest books or the most books. Let’s all just read how we want.” Agreed.
eight+ The NYPL Young Lions Fiction Award finalists were announced recently. The award honors a writer under 35 for a novel or story collection. I was happy to see Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah nominated for Chain-Gang All-Stars.
